Athronyddu am Grefydd: Cyfeiriadau Newydd (First Edition)
Llandysul: Gwasg Gomer, 1974. First Edition. Hardcover. Written entirely in Welsh. Title loosely translated into English: "Philosophizing About Religion: New Directions" by Dewi Z. Phillips, published by Gomer Press, 1974. The National Library of Australia catalogue calls it “Philosophy of religion. Essays. Welsh texts,” with a short bibliography.
Phillips argues that the philosopher’s job is to take religious speech on its own terms—prayer, worship, talk of God—rather than translate it into metaphysics or psychology and then “explain it away.” Belief is part of a form of life. Confusion starts when philosophy treats “Does God exist?” as the same kind of question as “Does this mountain exist?” That is the “new direction”: not uniting theology and philosophy into one system, but seeing that they do different work. The Swansea School summary of this book puts it that inquiry must engage religious expressions in their context and lived reality, clarifying rather than explaining belief.
