The Lees of Virginia: Biography of a Family (Thomas Wolfe Association)

New York: Halcyon House, 1935. Illustrated. Hardcover. On the front flyleaf is written: "R.F. Campbell From Rev. & Mrs. C. Grier Davis, Dec. 12, 1938- 80th Birthday." R. F. Campbell is the Rev. Robert Fishburne Campbell (1858–1947), pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Asheville, North Carolina, from 1892 until he retired in 1938, then pastor emeritus. That was Thomas Wolfe's family’s church. Thomas Wolfe went to Sunday school there as a boy.

When Wolfe died in September 1938, Campbell, by then the former pastor, officiated at the funeral in that church, assisted by the current pastor, C. Grier Davis. The service used “Abide with Me” and “Crossing the Bar.” Campbell said he could not speak definitely about Wolfe’s religious life, and quoted Of Time and the River: “Where shall the weary rest? When shall the lonely of heart come home?” Campbell was a civic as well as a church figure in Asheville, and is buried in Riverside Cemetery, as Wolfe is.

ABOUT THIS BOOK: "The Lees of Virginia: Biography of a Family" is Burton J. Hendrick’s history of the Lee family of Virginia, from the immigrant founder to the generation of Robert E. Lee. Hendrick, a Pulitzer-winning biographer, works from earlier Lee memoirs, Edmund Jennings Lee’s genealogy, and manuscript collections at Harvard, the University of Virginia, the Virginia Historical Society, and the Library of Congress. John Adams’s remark that the Lees had “more men of merit” than any other family is the book’s epigraph.
